How It Works

This chart pre-calculates water volume in gallons for the most common pool sizes across multiple depths. The formulas used are:

  • Rectangle: Length × Width × Depth × 7.48 = Gallons
  • Round: Diameter × Diameter × Depth × 5.9 = Gallons
  • Oval: Long Dia × Short Dia × Depth × 5.9 = Gallons

Click any column header to sort the table. Use the shape filter to focus on a specific pool type, and toggle between gallons and liters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this pool gallons chart?

Find your pool shape and closest dimensions in the left column, then read across to the column matching your average water depth. The number shown is the approximate volume in US gallons. Use the shape filter tabs to narrow results to your pool type.

What if my pool size isn't listed in the chart?

This chart covers the most common pool sizes. If your pool dimensions fall between listed sizes, use our Pool Volume Calculator for exact results with custom dimensions. You can also interpolate between the two closest sizes in the chart.

How do I determine my pool's average depth?

For pools with a consistent depth, use that depth. For pools with a shallow and deep end, add the shallow depth and deep depth together, then divide by 2. For example, a pool that goes from 3ft to 6ft has an average depth of 4.5ft.

Why is knowing my pool's gallon capacity important?

Your pool's volume in gallons determines the correct dosage for all pool chemicals, the right pump and filter size, heater BTU requirements, and how much salt to add for saltwater systems. Using incorrect chemical amounts can damage equipment or create unsafe swimming conditions.
