How It Works

This calculator determines how many pounds of salt your pool needs based on the difference between your current and target salt levels.

Formula: Pounds of Salt = (Target PPM - Current PPM) / 1,000 × 83.3 × (Pool Volume / 10,000)

The constant 83.3 represents the pounds of salt needed per 10,000 gallons to raise the concentration by 1,000 ppm. Results are rounded up to full bags since salt is sold in 40 lb and 50 lb bags.

Most saltwater chlorine generators work best between 2,700 and 3,400 ppm. Always add salt gradually, running the pump to dissolve it, and retest before adding more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much salt do I need for my pool?

The amount of salt depends on your pool volume, current salt level, and target salt level. Most saltwater chlorine generators require 2,700-3,400 ppm of salt. As a rule of thumb, it takes about 83 lbs of salt per 10,000 gallons to raise the level by 1,000 ppm. Use this calculator for an exact amount based on your pool.

What happens if my pool salt level is too high?

Salt levels above 3,600 ppm can damage pool equipment, cause corrosion to metal fixtures, and may trigger a high-salt warning on your chlorine generator. Unlike chemicals that dissipate, salt does not evaporate. The only way to lower salt levels is to partially drain and refill the pool with fresh water.

How often should I test my pool salt level?

Test your pool salt level at least once a month during swimming season. Salt levels can drop due to splash-out, backwashing, rain dilution, and filter cleaning. Most saltwater chlorine generators have a built-in salt level display, but an independent test strip or digital tester provides a more accurate reading.

What type of salt should I use in my pool?

Use pool-grade salt (sodium chloride) that is at least 99.8% pure. Avoid rock salt, as it contains impurities that can stain your pool. Solar salt and mined salt are both acceptable if they meet purity standards. Never use salt with anti-caking agents or iodine, as these can affect water chemistry and damage equipment.
